han hsu-tung crafts intricate pixelated sculptures made of wood

designboom_since 2006, taiwanese artist han hsu-tung has been uploading his pixelated sculptures to the internet. made of wood, the carved figurative works showcase an encounter between the digital and analogue world, as well as a sense of movement and displacement. the latest example is a massive free-standing ear that joins a collection human figures against mobile phones, oversized hands, horses and birds among others.

to create his sculptures, han hsu-tung first plans them by sketching and then builds a clay model. after that, he usually uses walnut, teak, or african wax wood and sculpts the wood into the glitch-like sculptures. crafted like a puzzle, these intricate pieces dissolve into a meadow of pixels that seem to defy gravity.
