KLPA Interim Edition Autoportrait Prize 2024
The Kuala Lumpur International Photoawards (KLPA) Interim Edition Autoportrait Prize 2024 is a photography competition aimed at photographers of all levels, inviting them to explore the theme of self-portraiture. In this edition, participants are encouraged to turn the camera on themselves, acting as both the director and subject of their portraits. The competition seeks to push the boundaries of traditional portrait photography, encouraging photographers to move beyond the "selfie" and delve deeper into personal expression, originality, and experimentation. The KLPA has gained recognition since its inception in 2009 as one of the most significant photography awards, especially in Southeast Asia, making it a vital platform for contemporary portrait artists globally.
For the 2024 edition, the KLPA focuses specifically on the art of self-portraiture, aligning with the theme "Autoportrait." This theme invites photographers to reflect on their own identity and emotions, capturing personal narratives and perspectives through creative self-portraits. Past winners have drawn inspiration from avant-garde and surrealist techniques, influenced by artists such as Man Ray and Francesca Woodman. The competition challenges participants to express themselves through innovative visual storytelling that highlights their individuality and personal experiences.
The competition is open to photographers worldwide, and the top 30 entries will be showcased in various international exhibitions in 2024 and 2025. Finalists will see their work displayed at festivals in locations such as Photolux, Italy, and the Auckland Festival of Photography, New Zealand. Additionally, an exhibition at the Hin Bus Depot in George Town, Penang, Malaysia, is planned for 2025, offering artists significant exposure across the global photography community. With cash prizes awarded to the top three winners, KLPA continues to support and elevate the art of portraiture on an international stage.
Entry fees range from $12 for 1 image to $66 for up to 10 images.
